Exploring the profound impact of President Buhari's leadership on Nigeria and beyond, we delve into his key contributions and the values he embodied.
A True Patriot
Now, he returns to his Maker. And we, as a nation, are left with the sobering task of drawing meaning from his life, not by romanticising it but by reflecting on what it stood for: that to love Nigeria is not a slogan. It is a lifelong commitment, one that demands integrity, sacrifice, and an abiding belief in our collective future.
A Leader Like No Other
I was privileged to serve under him in different capacities over the last 11 years. In all these, I have nothing but gratitude to him for believing in me to serve in such exalted roles, and more so for his fatherly counsel, support, and patriotic stand on national issues. It was truly an honor to be part of the journey of this noble gentleman in his labour of love for the country he dearly loved — Nigeria.
Inspiring Legacy
After retiring from office, he returned to his farm and tended to his cattle, staying scrupulously out of the public eye and away from politics – always and intentionally refusing to comment. It was more important for this modest man to give a wide berth to his successor than to express any opinion, believing intervention in political affairs by ex-leaders was rarely merited, and more often a sign of a vanity he would never personally countenance.
Farewell, Mr. President!
As I stood on the tarmac, waiting for his body to be brought from the plane, beside President Bola Tinubu, the President of Guinea Bissau, three former African Presidents and a Prime Minister, and thousands of people around us, I couldn’t help but wonder: What would he have said if he could see this himself? And then it came to me, his favorite exclamation, full of wonder and disbelief: “My good God!”
May his memory always be blessed.
Unshakable belief in the Nigerian project
In General Buhari, Nigeria found a leader who embodied discipline, simplicity, and moral strength. Buhari, soldier of soldiers
But not when you are Muhammadu Buhari, soldier of soldiers, an officer and gentleman. Not when you had survived a life threatening illness that lasted the better part of the year 2017, and you came out of it fresher and more vigorous.I didn’t expect President Buhari to leave, at least not in the next 10 years. For two days in March, I was with him in his Kaduna home, which had just been renovated, and which he moved into about three weeks earlier from his Daura, Katsina State homestead.
