Tribute By Abubakar Malami SAN

With deep sorrow and profound respect, we join millions of Nigerians and admirers around the world in paying tribute to General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), GCFR—a soldier, a patriot, and a man whose life was defined by unwavering dedication to the service of his country.

In General Buhari, Nigeria found a leader who embodied discipline, simplicity, and moral strength. His military career was one of distinction and duty, marked by courage on the battlefield and a fierce commitment to the unity and sovereignty of Nigeria. Rising through the ranks of the Nigerian Army, he served his nation with honor and integrity, culminating in his leadership as Head of State between 1983 and 1985, and later as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023.

Buhari's legacy is carved into the pages of Nigeria’s modern history. As President, he championed the fight against corruption with uncommon resolve, insisting that public office was a place of service, not self-enrichment. He fully implemented the Treasury Single Account (TSA)—a financial reform initiated under his predecessor—to curb leakages and ensure transparency in government revenues. He strengthened the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and waged a relentless war against graft in high places.

His administration invested heavily in critical infrastructure—roads, railways, bridges, and airports—that will serve generations to come. Notable projects include the Second Niger Bridge, the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge railway and the revival of the Port Harcourt–Maiduguri rail corridor. Under his leadership, the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme boosted agricultural productivity and helped reduce rice importation, creating jobs and reducing food dependency.

His quiet dignity, spartan lifestyle, and unshakable belief in the Nigerian project inspired hope in millions, especially the poor and marginalized. Though not without his critics, even his adversaries admitted he was a man of immense personal integrity.

Outside of power, he remained a symbol of humility and restraint, never seeking revenge, never playing politics with the future of the country he loved so deeply. In the end, Muhammadu Buhari left public office just as he entered it—calm, honest, and unbending in his principles.

To his beloved family, to the people of Daura, and to all Nigerians who mourn this great loss, we say: take heart. His was a life well lived—a life of sacrifice, service, and sincerity.

May the soul of General Muhammadu Buhari rest in perfect peace, and may his legacy continue to inspire a new generation of Nigerian leaders.

Rest in Peace, Baba. You served, and you served well.
